As I compose this post, ocean waves crash against the shoreline, the base rhythm in a natural symphony, which is punctuated by the shrill staccato of birds chirping to alert vacationers to the fact it is time to rise. Sitting on the balcony looking out on the vast blue Pacific Ocean, I am aware of my oneness and connectedness simultaneously. One woman on a journey to truth, authenticity, and fulfillment, while seeking to find like-minded friends who understand me and who have my back no matter what!
I am here with four stunningly beautiful Black women, who like me are seeking, peace, healing, and renewal. The is “Girls’ Trip 2019”, planned in the spur of the moment as my friend and colleague suggested during lunch that she could use some girl time. Zihuatanejo was decided upon as our destination. We each thought of friends who would “gel” easily with one another and extended invitations, which were promptly accepted.
The trip for four of us explorers, was mostly uneventful. One explorer had to spend an extra day in Mexico City so her experience caused some angst and upset at the onset, which required the soothing balm of hugs and affirmation as she arrived at our gate for the final leg of our trip to the Mexican Riviera. We instantly bonded around the adversity of one. But isn’t that what we do? Have one another’s back!
Leaving the itinerary largely undefined, with one exception, have fun! We are doing so in abundance. Other guests, stare at us as if we are center stage for their entertainment, amusingly chiming in to tell us how to pose for photos. We on the other hand are oblivious to those around us as we enjoy the bubble of friendship, a safe space for one another to exist without judgement. A space for us to share our true stories, to be vulnerable, and at times raw with emotion. Spontaneously belly laughing with reckless abandon at the things we say or observe, we are healing ourselves and nurturing our collective souls.
Each night as we conclude the evening and prepare to settle into bed for rejuvenation, we gather together to express what we have learned during the day. What I have learned thus far is that we all want the same things:
- To be seen;
- To be heard:
- To be loved unconditionally;
- To be nurtured and protected; and
- To be in a safe place where we can show up authentically.
I personally have learned that it has been way too long since I have laughed so hard that I am brought to tears…
As we start day three I anticipate more fun, laughter, and potentially tears (of joy I hope). We have set our sight upon exploring Zihuatanejo today and upon our intentional journey to connectedness and oneness simultaneously.
